Effects of the Gaza war

On 24th May 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), in summary proceedings brought by the Republic of South Africa, ordered that Israel must cease its offensive in the Rafah area and refrain from all other actions that lead to a deterioration of the situation for the civilian population. In the German-Italian relationship, the ICJ is important for questions relating to the categorisation of barbaric acts during the Nazi period in Italy, in particular whether the Federal Republic of Germany can defend its state immunity against individual claims by victims and surviving relatives.

We can contribute absolutely nothing to the summary proceedings against Israel due to a lack of competence and expertise. However, most of us live in Germany and are aware of the responsibility that Germany bears as a result of the darkest chapter in its history. In this respect, it simply seems unacceptable to us that people of the Jewish faith are being attacked again in Germany today even if the criticism of the behaviour of the Israeli government (and this is also shown by the condemnation by the ICJ) at least seems understandable. We very much hope that public opinion will learn to differentiate and that our Jewish fellow citizens can live here again without fear.
