Psychological test for judges

Psychological test for judges

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) is one of the most frequently used personality tests in clinical psychology and psychiatry worldwide. It is used as an aid in the investigation of personality structure, particularly in the case of mental disorders (Wikipedia).

According to the Italian government, which refers to the Minnesota test as a model, a corresponding test is to be carried out on all future judges from 2026. The form and content of the test will be determined by the High Council of the Judiciary (Consiglio superiore della Magistratura) in collaboration with psychology professors. Those who do not pass the psychological test can repeat it four times; if they do not pass the test, they cannot become a judge.

The President of the National Association of Judges, Giuseppe Santalucia, has already criticised the plan as “propaganda”. There is already a health check on judges and it is to be feared that it will serve to weed out uncomfortable personalities (il modo di essere, l'espressione di una personalità che non piace).
